Treatment of depressive disorders

Severe depressive forms

The major goal in the treatment of depression is the improvement of mental and cognitive processes, as well as the improvement of high nervous activity to the changing environmental conditions.

During the treatment of severe depressive forms, accompanied by manic depressive psychoses and suicidal attempts, potent psychotropic drugs are used, such as Clozaril and Mellaril. Tricyclic antidepressants, like: Amoxapine and Amitriptyline are also used in such conditions. These tricyclic antidepressants inhibit the psychomotor functions of a person, have got a big number of side effects and cause addiction in prolonged use. The use of these drugs is absolutely reasonable in people with acute attacks of manic depressive psychosis. However, people with mild and moderate stages of depression should avoid of taking these medications.

There are even safer medications on the world pharmaceutical market. They have an antidepressant effect and selectively act on the brain functions. The action of such drugs is directed to the increase of serotonin concentration and does not inhibit the mental functions of the brain.

According to the international classification of the drugs, medications that increase the levels of serotonin in the brain are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
